Compost bin rollout in Greenways, Edgemead

21 August 2025

The City is encouraging residents in Greenways, Edgemead and the surrounding areas to get involved in home composting by picking up a free compost bin at the next rollout.

In an effort to bolster the City’s efforts to divert organic waste away from landfills, the Urban Waste Management Directorate will be hosting two compost bin rollout sessions in August:

  • 23 August 2025 from 8:00 – 12:00: Edgemead Community Hall – 83 Edgemead Drive, Edgemead
  • 30 August 2025 from 8:00 – 12:00: Harmony Park – 3 Dolphin Street, Greenways

Organic waste that ends up in landfill contributes greatly to global warming by producing methane gas. Home composting allows residents to instead use their food scraps and off-cuts to enrich their household soil and improve growth of their garden plants or vegetable gardens.

‘It’s our joint responsibility to manage our waste more effectively for the benefit of our communities. Composting has a lot of potential to minimise waste and reduce carbon emissions because almost anyone with a small garden can do it,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.

Benefits of composting

  • Reduces household organic waste
  • Increases bin space each week
  • Produces free, high-quality compost to improve soil health
  • Helps soil retain moisture and supports the growth of home gardens

To qualify for a free composting container, applicants must

1. Be the owner or tenant of a single residential property (excluding sectional title flats/apartments)
2. Have a secure garden or yard area for the compost bin
3. Bring a copy of their municipal account
4. Bring their South African ID book, ID card or passport

Interested and qualifying residents must apply in person at one of the scheduled collection events. Applications will not be accepted outside of these specified dates and times. If successful, applicants will receive their bins on their day.

Compost bins are limited to 250 per rollout and residents will receive their bins on a first come, first served basis.
